Improving Porcellio's Place: Secrets for Setting Up Things Well

Improving Porcellio’s Place: Secrets for Setting Up Things Well

Elsa WilliamsJune 25, 2025

A good medium is important for making a good home for your isopods.  As the saying goes, what’s below is the base of any good habitat.  If you want to keep your porcellio isopods happy, healthy, and busy, the substrate parts you choose are more than just dirt. They’re what make the artificial world look like the real world.  You can make sure your plants are comfortable, stay hydrated, and even breed more easily if you know how to make the right substrate.  To build the perfect isopod home, let’s look at some simple tips.

Coconut coir’s many benefits

There’s a reason why coconut coir is a popular medium substance.  It absorbs water well without getting wet because it is made from the tough husks of coconuts.  In order for isopods to survive and grow, humidity levels need to stay fixed.  When isopods dig, it’s easy for them to do because coconut coir is soft and fluffy.  You won’t have to change it too often because it breaks down slowly.  Isopods don’t get hurt by this natural material, and it helps good microorganisms grow, which keeps the area clean.

Nature’s food: leaf litter

Isopods will feel like they are on the forest floor when you add leaf litter to their cage.  There is safety in dried leaves and food that is needed.  Isopods love to go beneath and consume the leaves as they break down.   Moreover, leaf litter helps things break down, which nourishes the helpful bacteria and fungi preserving the condition of the surroundings.   Spread a layer of leaf litter over the substrate, which is like their native habitat, it makes isopods feel right at home.

They like bark

It does more than just look nice to put some bark on top of the ground.  As isopods hide in bark, they can get away from light and dry air in small spaces called microhabitats.  Your isopods stay hydrated because the rough surface lets water gather, making damp pockets.  Insects like isopods have a reason to explore and work out because bark adds variety to the ground.  Slowly breaking down some barks releases nutrients into the substrate, while others just provide structure and protection for a long time. It will be easier to see porcellio isopods going about their busy lives if you give them the right mix of colors and activity.

Being inspired by nature is the best way to choose the right medium for your isopods.  Combining coconut coir, leaf litter, and bark will allow your dogs a natural and safe habitat.   If you provide them the correct basis, they will be better and more fascinated in their environment.  You can help your isopods grow by following these easy ground tips.
